Visitors will have a rare opportunity to explore one of Norwich’s hidden treasures when The Bishop’s Garden, Bishopgate, opens to the public next Sunday, 12 July, in support of St John Ambulance Norfolk and Waveney. The event is being organised by St John’s Norwich Network and will run from 1pm to 4.30pm, with last entry at 4pm.
Believed to be the oldest private garden in Norwich, the historic site features dramatic double borders, a productive kitchen garden, a rose and hosta walk, a wildflower labyrinth centred on a 400-year-old pear tree and a jungle walk through towering exotic plants. Run organically, the garden is home to many rare and unusual plants, including a hebe cultivated from a sprig taken from Queen Victoria’s wedding bouquet.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy homemade refreshments, family games, ambulance tours, first aid and CPR demonstrations, and a large plant sales area. Admission is £5 for adults, with accompanied under-16s and wheelchair users admitted free. Funds raised will support the work of St John Ambulance in Norfolk and Waveney.
Ed Webb, Network Lead for St John’s Norwich Network, said:
"We are very grateful for this opportunity for the public to enjoy one of Norwich's most historic and beautiful spaces while supporting the work of St John Ambulance in Norfolk and Waveney. Whether visitors come for the garden and plants, the refreshments or to learn more about first aid, we look forward to welcoming them on the day."
