The Bonkers Quilt is a chaotic patchwork made up of over 400 pieces created by 100 makers from 10 countries all around the world. People of all ages and abilities were welcome, there were no rules, and it has no βright way upβ!
The finished quilt measures a massive 2.5m x 1.5m, and itβs bursting with vibrant colours and interesting textures. Starting out as a celebration of community spirit, global connection, and a shared passion for slow-stitching and creativity, it's grown to become a way to raise vital funds for global humanitarian aid.
Known as Arty Farty Annie through her YouTube channel and worldwide online community, Annie started this project back in 2025, when she organised a small workshop hosted by Bazaar at their August Show in Sussex. She invited fellow crafters unable to attend in person to send a piece of stitchery to add to the quilt, with the aim that it could eventually be sold for charity. At that point, Annie had no idea how this seed of an idea would blossom into such a massive project.
Β The response was staggering. Over the course of a year, packages began arriving at Annieβs home in Norwich, where she spent hundreds of hours painstakingly stitching them into the quilt and filling all the wonky spaces. In total, there are 400 to 500 individual pieces; a wonderfully eclectic mix of styles and techniques sent in by makers of all ages and abilities, from experienced embroiderers to people who had never stitched before.
Every single piece tells a story,
Annie reflects,
We have pieces stitched by three generations of a single family who sat around a table to enjoy creating together. There are pieces with meaningful details that tell very personal stories, and we even have pieces that went astray in the international post, which I then recreated from photos, before they were miraculously found and delivered just in time to take their place in the final design.
This is an eco-friendly project, with all the pieces being made of rescued fabrics and scraps, stitched onto a piece of cotton waste from the curtain-manufacturing industry, then backed with an antique French Damask tablecloth donated by a community member. The quilt was then hand-tied and finished with hand-stitched binding, with hanging loops added to all four sides, so it can be hung in any orientation.
To celebrate and commemorate this immense community achievement, and to remember all of the stories wrapped up in this beautiful quilt, Annieβs son, Tom, stepped in to bridge the gap between traditional heritage craft and modern technology. He engineered a highly sophisticated, interactive digital archive. Visitors to the projectβs custom website can zoom deep into the details, inspecting individual stitches and clicking on every piece to read about the makers and their stories.
Annie explains:
The quilt is incredibly tactile, and I wish everyone could see it in person to fully appreciate it. By building the interactive map of all the pieces, we wanted to make sure that a contributor in the US, Australia or India could zoom right in to see their own stitches next to everyone elseβs, as well as being able to enjoy reading all the stories behind the work - the next best thing to seeing it in person!
The physical quilt is now complete, and the project is rapidly building toward its grand finale. From 8th to 15th November 2026, the Bonkers Quilt will go live for a special 7-day eBay Charity Auction, with all of the proceeds going straight to MSF (UK) to support global humanitarian aid.
For those who would like to support the cause, the projectβs digital hub allows visitors to explore the interactive archive, make direct donations via an integrated Tiltify tracker, or purchase custom print-on-demand keepsakes featuring the colourful design. These will only be available until 21st November.
As the countdown to the November auction begins, the "Bonkers Crew" is hoping that this locally-based project with a massive global heart will inspire people to think about what the power of community and creativity can do - one stitch at a time!
